Marine sciences are the cornerstone of Pakistan’s future economy and the sustainable development of its coastal belt, especially Balochistan. In this context, a consultative meeting was held at the Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS), bringing together leadership, faculty, and experts in the field.
The meeting was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Malik Tareen, former Vice Chancellor and Dean Faculty of Marine Sciences Prof. Dr. Shahid Amjad, Registrar Dr. Balach Rasheed, and Chairman Marine Sciences Department Dr. Waliullah Masroor Abro.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdul Malik Tareen highlighted LUAWMS’s active role in promoting the sustainable use of marine resources and improving the welfare of fishing communities through applied research and academic expertise. He noted that the university is producing skilled manpower through BS, MS, and PhD programs, contributing to research and practical advancements at both national and international levels.
Former Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Amjad shared his recommendations during the Board of Studies meeting, emphasizing that marine sciences are the backbone of Balochistan’s coastal economy and vital to strengthening Pakistan’s Blue Economy. He stressed the need to give marine sciences a central role in national policy-making.
During the discussions, Dean Faculty of Marine Sciences Prof. Dr. Azra Bano, Dr. Shazia Imran, Dr. Zafarullah Jatak, Edina Azad, and Iftikhar Ahmed also presented valuable recommendations, which were described as significant for the development of the sector.
Chairman Marine Sciences Department, Dr. Waliullah Masroor Abro, underlined that LUAWMS is providing scientific and technical support to government and international organizations — from fisheries policy development to protecting fishermen’s livelihoods, supporting coastal communities, and ensuring the sustainable development of Pakistan’s coastal areas.
